I’ve wanted to do an album for a long time but held off because I really didn’t know what direction I wanted to go in, or if I really had anything to say. I starting having conversations about 3 years ago with my producer about doing an album and he said that by sharing my personal interpretation of songs that I love was enough and that I didn’t’ need to say anything profound, just heartfelt and honest. I wanted my theater fans to hear these songs in a new light, but also wanted to feel like I was expressing myself in a new way. So people could hear how I sing when I’m not playing a character.

While we have the gift of life, it seems to me that only tragedy is to allow part of us to die - whether it is our spirit, our creativity, or our glorious uniqueness.

I want to go on the record and say I have never urinated in public. But the night is still young.

What motivates me is seeing people in the crowd and wondering what they’re going home to and what they’re dealing with, and knowing that for the time being we’re their escape.

If had a penny for every strange look I’ve gotten from strangers on the street I’d have about 10 to 15 dollars, which is a lot when you’re dealing with pennies.

Each episode takes eight days. Ten if it’s a longer, heavier episode. And we generally work about 17 hours a day. Within a day you can be doing one or two or three hours of shooting, filming, dancing and recording. Basically I try to explain to people that creating an episode of Glee is like jumping out of an airplane and falling to the ground – you learn your lines, you record your songs, you learn your choreography and we somehow land with our feet on the ground.

“The ability to have a conversation is very important, a good sense of humor, understanding my sense of humor — I think there is no better way to connect than through laughter, so I think that’s really important.”

“If you want to make an audience laugh, you dress a man up like an old lady and push her down the stairs. If you want to make comedy writers laugh, you push an actual old lady down the stairs.”

“I’ve always felt like you should love who you love—sexuality doesn’t matter. It would be so awesome if I didn’t get questions like, “How did you feel?” It would be so cool in the future if it weren’t even an issue to anybody anymore. People would see two girls kissing on TV and it wouldn’t be like, “On this show, two lesbians! Dun-dun-dun!” It wouldn’t ever even get brought up.”
